L Victoria Gowri, a former BJP leader and lawyer, was recently sworn in as an additional judge of the Madras High Court. The Supreme Court was reviewing petitions challenging her elevation to the high court at the time of her inauguration. By the end of it, the Supreme Court had dismissed the petitions against her. The Supreme Court said it could not order the Collegium to rethink its recommendation about Victoria Gowri. Members of the CPI(M) demonstrated outside the Madras High Court in Chennai on Tuesday, as barrister Victoria Gowri was sworn in as the court's new additional judge. Lawyers and CPI(M) members are opposing Gowri's former association with the BJP, as well as claimed instances of "hate speech" by her.
