01:03Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Briefly Detained For Anti-Coal Mine Protest In Germany | Mirror Now

On Tuesday, amid demonstrations against the destruction of a community to make way for a coal mine expansion, climate activist Greta Thunberg was jailed alongside other activists but was later freed, according to police. When police threatened to remove the group by force if they did not move away from the edge of the mine, Thunberg was detained while demonstrating at the opencast coal mine of Garzweiler 2, which is about 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) from the community of Luetzerath. To make room for the mine's expansion, the community in North Rhine-western Westphalia's region is being removed. According to activists, Germany should stop mining lignite, or brown coal, and instead concentrate on boosting renewable energy.#Germany #Luetzerath #Garzweiler #GretaThunberg #CoalProtest
